Introduction

Melbourne is a variety of weather conditions. It can be extremely hot in the summer and very cool in the winter. The rainy season is three months a year and get 596 millimeters per year (The Source, 2005), which is little rain. Besides, the surface temperature of the earth will increase by 1.4 to 5.8°C and sea levels rise by 0.09 to 0.88 meters (W.H.O. 2005). Rainfall patterns will also change (W.H.O. 2005). These changes are expected to have a serious impact on water resources, agricultural systems, coastal areas, native flora and fauna, snow cover and human health (W.H.O. 2005). Therefore, greenhouses should be built to protect the flora.

Support from government

The Victorian Government has developed a new Victorian Greenhouse Strategy to detail the action, and has allocated $100 million to enhancing food production by improving the function of greenhouses over the period to 2004 (W.H.O. 2005).

Visiting the Greenhouses

We are located in the city of Melbourne and open to Monday to Sunday from 8 am until 4 pm. We are not closed at weekends or any state holidays. Our staff is generally to answer any questions you may have or find a plant you wish to see. We do periodically close down some rooms for routine pest control spraying. If you would like to verify that a particular part of the collection will be open, please do not hesitate to call prior to your visit.

Events

Customers are able to rent an area to farm their own vegetable. Botany, horticulture and the natural sciences will be explained by our staff through the activities. This is what we want customers to experience the framing life. In different seasons and in the various parts of the greenhouse, there are also thematic exhibitions and special events, some of them spotlighting Asian gardening culture in the China and European culture in Holland.
School groups can have an educational program, including the thematic visits to the greenhouses and specially designed educational activities for every grade in the workshop.

Organized Tours

Tours are available to school groups, garden clubs and other interested groups. Additionally, on various weekends throughout the school year we offer public tours on weekends. A fee is charged ($5 per person) and prior reservations are required as tour size is limited. Currently we are offering weekend tours on:
* Every Saturdays at 1 pm
* Every Sundays at 1 pm
We are currently in a transitional phase with regards to tours and so scheduled tours are limited this spring. We plan to offer more weekend tours in the Fall 2005 / Spring 2006 season.
